Ghetto's are extreemly poor areas that were overpopulated to an extreeme because the Nazi's forced Jewish people into them. Oh, and why do I not find myself a tourist when I go to the City? I'm there about every other weekend, usually for two days and I spend the night. The Geography of Long Island Generally, Long Island becomes less and less dense as you head east. The western border of Long Island is home to towns like Floral Park and Valley Stream, and these towns tend to have a Queens-like feel, smaller, more crowded houses. In the middle of Nassau County, the western portion of LI, you have towns like Hicksville, Bethpage, and Levittown, famous for it's Levitt houses that were mass produced and quickly sold. Suburban and boring (no offense). In the northern-middle, there are some nice towns like Syosset, Muttontown, Brookville that are really overpriced. To the South, you have some towns like Baldwin and Freeport that tend to have a higher crime rate. As you head East on the south shore, there are nicer towns like South Merrick and South Bellmore; however they are not really THAT nice, the people who live there just think that they're hot shit because they have an ugly Splanch on .1 acre on top of the house next to them. To the north, you'll always have gorgeous overpriced houses in towns like Manhasset and Great Neck. The north shore mansions on the water are in places like Kings Point and Sands Point. But the north shore of Long Island is pretty much consistently nice and rich. However, as you hit Suffolk County, the north shore towns are a bit older, like Cold Spring Harbor, Port Jefferson, Huntington Village, Northport. Very cutesy. Once again, to the south in Suffolk...not so nice. Wyandanch, Brentwood, parts of Babylon and Bayshore, Central Islip - you don't wanna be there. In between, there are towns like Dix Hills, Commack, Elwood, Greenlawn, Kings Park and Smithtown which are known for their good school districts. Pretty nice areas to live. Elsewhere its a lot less dense than it is on the south shore for a while. You then hit middle Long Island, towns like Coram and Medford - big, boring, lots of small shoddy suburban housing. Mastic and Shirley on the south, pretty icky, places like Rocky Point and Shoreham to the north. Generally a depressing and bland part of Long Island. Then it splits into two forks. At this split is a town called Riverhead. Here we are getting rural, lots of migrant farm workers, poverty, depressing oversized strip malls in the middle of nowhere with 99 cent stores. People also don't realize that the Hamptons isn't ALL rich. There are obviously the really nice multi million dollar houses, but as you get further away from the water, its still farmland with poor illegal immigrants working and living there. On the north fork its the same thing. A lot of old cute farmhouses though. And a few gems, being nice little areas like Greenport, although I just saw on TV that they're doing a lot of drug busting there. (by the way, hope i didn't offend anyone, but i'm sure you're all used to it)

First of all, Long Island is not a penninsula. It is an island. Hence the name Long ISLAND. Secondly, I live on Long Island, in a prodominantly white suburb in Nassau to be specific and I have never heard anyone say that they live in "the city" if they live here. When most of us act "ghetto" we are basicaly mocking you all. We aren't "upstate". We're Long Island. It's a totally differnt portion of New York. Not all of us are rich snobs. Of course there are the select few who are, but around here, that's a minority. I'm middle class along with most of my town. However, two towns over is ridiculously wealthy and one town north is a bit, shall we say, poor. Being from upstate is not a bad thing. It's just got a different feel to it than from being on Long Island. Just like Long Island is significantly different from the city. And honestly, everyone that insults us Long Islanders is not necessarily jealous or wrong. We tend to be arrogant sons of bitches that think we're better than everyone else. But you all aren't completely right either. I've noticed that not many of you who have posted on here have looked at all the sides and are mostly ignorant assholes. But that's okay. If it works for you..have fun. Just don't expect to get anywhere in life. Oh and another thing. The whole "Yo, motherfuckaas from Long Island couln't last 2 days in Brooklyn\!". The southern part of the town on the water is where kids have parents who will buy them a car, but not a fucking Porsche or Corvette...maybe a used Chevy from the early 90's. I live in the northern part of town where kids have to start working when they turn 14 if they want a decent used car by the time they are a senior in high school. You also can't say that Long Island is ALL rich...you can't walk down the street in certain towns at night without being mugged. You NYCers should know this b/c certain Long Island towns are repeatedly on NYC news and newspapers. I would love to see some of you walk down the street in Central Islip, Brentwood, Wyandanch or Bay Shore and then we can talk about crime rates. And if you have ever even been here, you would NOT call Long Island rural in comparison to other suburbias. Long Island has the highest population density for suburbs in the country, and you will not see any farms until you pass Patchogue, and compared to Upstate (north of the Tappenzee Bridge), it does not even come close to rural. No one here thinks they are part of the city and we live here so we don't have to be a part of the city...you can ask ANY Long Island kid where their parents or grandparents grew up and they'll tell you the city, and obviously, they left the city for a reason.

Whoa whoa, first of all, Long Island is not part of the city or most definitely, not part of upstate New York. Furthermore, there is a huge difference between Nassau and Suffolk, North shore and South shore. The Hamptons are basically a separate entity altogether. Billy Joel said it best: either you date a rich girl from the North Shore or a cool girl from the South shore. Except North Shore girls are actually cooler...but South shore beaches are the best (Robert Moses field 4\!). We live for the summers...beer bqs and the beach. With that said, Most areas such as Nassau County and Western Suffolk County are not [rural]. [Rural] areas are hours from any type of city, having farms and acres of unused land. With traffic permitting, it is slightly over a 1/2 hour from the eastern part. I wont compare LI to Manhatten because Manhatten is Urban, but areas in queens are just as nice, and much nicer than areas on Long Island. We do have nice areas, but we also have bad areas as well. Areas like Hempstead are just the same as some parts of Queens, accept it.

it takes about 3 hours to get from the hamptons to brooklyn, so to make a general description is really stupid. for instance, my house in long island is closer to stamford or fairfield, conn. then it is to the hamptons, riverhead, or jamesport in suffolk.

Part of the suburban NY-NJ-CT metropoiltan area of 19,000,000 people. Levitown was one of the first incorpoarted suburbs in the 1940's after the depression and WWII. Now it is primaraly dominated by Guidos and Japs. Very segregated compared to other parts of the country I came to realize after living in Florida which happens to way alittle too diverse for me. Many rich wealthy obnoxious towns, many poor ghetto working class towns but overall mostly middle class suburban towns with families. Pretty safe for being in such a populated place. The city is very accessible usually anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Look to buy a house prepare to spend $500,000 or more for a decent looking home in a nice community. Schools are pretty good and the kids are mostly spoiled or live at home until they are 30 like on VH1'S Frank The Entertainer in a Basement Affair.

island east of new york city, consisting of queens, brooklyn, nassau, and suffolk, but most commonly just referred to as suburban counties nassau and suffolk. tons of gorgeous beaches, lighthouses, harbors, and cutesy towns, not to mention fire island and the hamptons. a lot of stuff to see and do in spring, summer and fall. charactarized by an abundance of strip malls, 24-hour diners and 7-11's, and great school districts. suffolk in particular boasts alot of nature preserves, and there are some farms as you get further east although in no way is it hillbilly-ish. the north shore tends to be affluent, most of the south shore is less so, and is not somewhere you want to spend time. but it does cost twice as much to live ANYWHERE on LI then it does in pretty much any other state, so the stereotype of long island being rich isn't necessarily false. long islanders can be cocky, but we have good reason\!\! its a great place to grow up, in the shadow of the greatest city in the world but with every benefit of the suburbs. you are never more than 20 minutes away from a beach or a mall. not to mention the awesome pizza and bagels that wont be found anywhere besides new york. and yea, we have accents, and we love em so deal with it. long island kids tend to go away to school and realize they are just a little bit better than everyone else... LONG ISland is the best place to live\!\!\!\!

long island is an island off the coast of new york, it has beaches, farms, malls, and transportation to places such as new york city. the island is often said to be shaped like a fish.there are a wide variety of places in long island that reflect the different cultures, groups and signs of affluence scattered towards the island. the island is divided into two counties, nassau and suffolk county.nassau county is the more developed and populated county.there are two parts to the county, the northshore and the southshore. the north shore of nassau county is filled with rocky beaches and affluent neighborhoods. the towns around this area are often coastal and not so built up, the houses are also often large and more traditional than those found on the south shore. the south shore of long island is the more built up part of the island. most of the towns in the area are more middle class and more of a traditional suburbia setting. many of the houses are newer developments and they are more similar to eachother. the south shore has a large variety of shopping centers and a larger population. some of the more affluent areas of the south shore include garden city and rockville centres. some of the more popular destinations include the barrier islands just off the coast such as long beach and jones beach. beaches such as these have smooth sand and often popular boardwalks. the next county is suffolk county, which is larger than nassau county in area. suffolk county has a large variety of neighborhoods from the industrial areas of smithtown to the smaller towns of quogue. suffolk county is more of what traditional long island is. there are many farms, beaches and small towns in suffolk county, which make it a popular tourist destination. suffolk county also has more popular tourist destinations such as the hamptons and montauk point. both of these areas contain beaches and attractions which make them desireable for summer homes. the hamptons are the main attraction of this part of the island, attracting many people a year, many come for the lazy summer days and the partying at night. outlet stores in places such as riverhead and vineyards in the north eastern part of sufflok county also attract visitors. long island is truely a unique destination that could only be understood by the locals.

Long Island is a suburb of New York City. Generally the further out east you get the less dense the population gets. I've lived here my whole life and we have awesome beaches if you're willing to go past the crowded obvious ones, some really nice towns with good schools, and a lot of history. But we also have some really crappy towns that would be "ghetto" no matter where you put them (roosevelt, some parts of hempstead), there's a very high cost of living here for the mostly middle class population, and the snobby people in the rich towns suck. Long Island is like a suburban city one could suppose. People who do not live here or who have never been here shouldn't assume we all think we are better.

Part of the suburban NY-NJ-CT metropolitan area of 19,000,000 people. Levi town was one of the first incorporated suburbs in the 1940's after the depression and WWII. Now it is primarily dominated by Guido's and Japs. Very segregated compared to other parts of the country I came to realize after living in Florida which happens to way out as being a little too diverse for me. Many rich wealthy obnoxious towns, many poor ghetto working class towns but overall mostly middle class suburban towns with families. Pretty safe for being in such a populated place. The city is very accessible usually anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Look to buy a house prepare to spend $500,000 or more for a decent looking home in a nice community. Schools are pretty good and the kids are mostly spoiled or live at home until they are 30 like on VH1'S Frank The Entertainer in a Basement Affair.

Public transportation sucks so you must have a car to get around and the traffic is horrific\! The North Shore is very preppy and WASPY and has a lot of Old Money. The South Shore is mainly middle class to working class with some lower-income pockets. I am from North Bayshore, but have lived in Various NYC bouroughs for 22 years and have NEVER heard anyone, anywhere refer to Long Island as upstate. New York State consists of "the City", "Upstate" and "Long Island". Most Manhattanites are from nowhere near NYC, so they're opinion of what consitutes a New Yorker are irrelevent. It's hilarious that people living in MAnhattan critisize Long Island for being too rich, when the average rent there is like $2500, and a co-op starts at a Million. Long Isand may be segregated in many sections, But the Bayshore, Brentwood, Central Islip section of South Shore Suffolk is not. It is also working class to poor. Most of the declining areas are on the south shore and lay false the claim of all rich, all rural. In fact, LI is quite overdeveloped. Rural areas don't have punishing traffic. True, culturally, it is deficiant. There is, in fact, little to do at night or otherwise. I found it boring as hell, that's why I left. Also, many people are provincial and lame, but not as much so as 20 or so years ago. In the Brentwood/Bayshore area there are plenty of gangs, crack, violence, larceny and 10 dollar blowjobs from a variety of creatures. That's ghetto. Dangerous, depressing and cyclical.

Sometowns are notorious like Wyandanch and Central Islip.

Most of the people on LI have never left LI which gives the place a very haunted and inbred feel. Those who are ambitious will go to college instead of working at their uncle's detailing shop but will go to Hofstra or LIU so they don't have to leave. Many LIers hope to one day work at Cablevision (which is run by a junkie who screwed up the NY Knicks and his daddy's company) or the LIRR where it was found that 90% of retiree's were also claiming 100% disability with their pensions. Most girls in LI gain sexual experience early at the hands of adult males, many of them married. This is one of the reasons why LI girls usually look washed out by the time they are 18. Drugs are a contributing factor. Many people believe that if you give a LI girl some cocaine you are guaranteed anal sex. Much of this sex occurs at one of LI's many motels which charge by the hour and are hotbeds of adultery and body lice. One of the most misunderstood areas of our nation. Settled in 1638, the island consists of 4 counties, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Brooklyn and Queens are Boroughs of New York City and are therefore not generally considered part of Long Island. If you are "dissing" Long Island and you are from Long Island, you are most likely from Nassau County, a stale, bizarre, and overdeveloped area full of strip malls and busy highways. It is the quintessential Long Island stereotype and unfortunately gives the rest of Long Island a bad name. If youre "dissing" Long Island and are not from Long Island, youre probably a young person from the midwest now living a [hip] lifestyle in New York City. You have never really been to Long Island, except maybe a friends parents home in Nassau County. Most of Suffolk County is still very rural and has maintained much of its historical character and charm, though the integrity of these self-sustaining villages are constantly threatened by the encroaching Nassau County. Suffolk County is more like an area of New England as far as its towns and villages go. It is a very relaxing area and home to a plethora of outdoor opportunities and is a place full of culture and historical value for those who seek it. It's very easy to write off Long Island as a suburban wasteland, and as a matter of fact...keep doing it because its getting too crowded for the people who love it here. :)

Nassau County gives the rest of Long Island a bad name.

Upstate is completely different than downstate, its more like pennsylvania, and doesnt embrase the "New York" atmosphere.

Long Island is the atmosphere of NYC put into a suburban setting. Long Islanders like to refer to each other as New Yorkers because the two areas are very related. But even diffrent areas on Long Island have diffrent feelings. Nassau and Western Suffolk have a lot more people who are more commonly jewish and more appreciative of the city. East of western suffolk (Huntington, Commack, Farmingdale, etc.) feels more like people who don't really like the city and are more like typical Middle americans. Some parts of Long Island have a very "Queens-ish" feeling to them. Some parts of the very west end of Nassau county have a similar atmosphere to Queens (Great Neck, New Hyde Park, Manhasset).
