- 1. (long island) (1379↑, 635↓)Look- everyone that is dissing Long Island is making some good points. And some shitty ones. I'm from Syosset, in Nassau. The people here tend to be snobby rich idiots who don't care about anything besides themselves, money, sex, and when the next time they'll get drunk or high is. What you are WRONG about- There is not a damn sane person on Long Island that thinks we are part of New York CITY. We are New Yorkers- because we live in New York STATE. Not because we live in the city. Can you call someone from Florida a Floridian? Yep. Then you can call someone from NY a New Yorker. And all you people that say Long Island, OR New York City is [ghetto] needs to get a clue. Ghetto's are extreemly poor areas that were overpopulated to an extreeme because the Nazi's forced Jewish people into them. If you think that wearing baggy clothes, speaking inchoherintly and wearing a huge cross on your neck makes you Ghetto- you make me laugh. Oh, and why do I not find myself a tourist when I go to the City? I'm there about every other weekend, usually for two days and I spend the night. Me and my friends laugh at all the idiots who walk on the wrong side of the sidewalk and stop to point up and go "woah.. look at the giant cup of noodles\! Its acutally STEAMING\!" We actually saw someone 3 days ago who was looking for the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in Times Square. That was quite amusing. So.. key points. _______________ -Long Island is NOT part of New York City -People from LI are still New Yorkers -Long Island is south of the city, therefore we are NOT upstate. Different region, smartones. -If you are posting on a website from a COMPUTER, you are NOT ghetto.
Get over youreselves. Quick.

Author: jake0029 http://long-island.urbanup.com/15432387. (long island) (312↑, 135↓)Geographically, a large island formed by glacial till deposited by glaciers in the last ice age. Consists of the suburban counties of Nassau and Suffolk, along with the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, with a total population of around 7 million. Regionally/Politically, just Nassau and Suffolk counties, the eastern four-fifths of the geographical Long Island, with a population of 2.5 million. This is the most common use of the term. Until the explosion of suburban development following World War II, Long Island was a geographically diverse region, with beaches, hills, woods, praries (yep), petrified forests (that, too), and small, idyllic fishing and farming villages. Now, the landscape is dominated by suburban towns and unincorporated communities that range in population from a couple hundred to around 50,000 people. Beach resort/bedroom communities like [The Hamptons] are extremely popular with downstate in the summer months. In addition, Jones Beach is a popular recreational and music venue, while Fire Island is world-famous as a gay mecca and a historic nautical community. The good: High quality of life, low crime rate, proximity to New York City, reasonably efficient and reliable public transit, attractive beaches, Splish Splash waterpark. The bad: Aging population, rising cost of living, racial segregation, urban sprawl, the necessity of owning a car, beach erosion, increasing problems with gangs, the trashy reputation of some of its younger residents ("[lidiot]s").
Author: F the Hamptons in the A http://long-island.urbanup.com/12675288. (long island) (222↑, 119↓)The Geography of Long Island Generally, Long Island becomes less and less dense as you head east. The western border of Long Island is home to towns like Floral Park and Valley Stream, and these towns tend to have a Queens-like feel, smaller, more crowded houses. In the middle of Nassau County, the western portion of LI, you have towns like Hicksville, Bethpage, and Levittown, famous for it's Levitt houses that were mass produced and quickly sold. Suburban and boring (no offense). In the northern-middle, there are some nice towns like Syosset, Muttontown, Brookville that are really overpriced. To the South, you have some towns like Baldwin and Freeport that tend to have a higher crime rate. As you head East on the south shore, there are nicer towns like South Merrick and South Bellmore; however they are not really THAT nice, the people who live there just think that they're hot shit because they have an ugly Splanch on .1 acre on top of the house next to them. To the north, you'll always have gorgeous overpriced houses in towns like Manhasset and Great Neck. The north shore mansions on the water are in places like Kings Point and Sands Point. But the north shore of Long Island is pretty much consistently nice and rich. However, as you hit Suffolk County, the north shore towns are a bit older, like Cold Spring Harbor, Port Jefferson, Huntington Village, Northport. Very cutesy. Once again, to the south in Suffolk...not so nice. Wyandanch, Brentwood, parts of Babylon and Bayshore, Central Islip - you don't wanna be there. In between, there are towns like Dix Hills, Commack, Elwood, Greenlawn, Kings Park and Smithtown which are known for their good school districts. Pretty nice areas to live. Elsewhere its a lot less dense than it is on the south shore for a while. You then hit middle Long Island, towns like Coram and Medford - big, boring, lots of small shoddy suburban housing. Mastic and Shirley on the south, pretty icky, places like Rocky Point and Shoreham to the north. Generally a depressing and bland part of Long Island. Then it splits into two forks. At this split is a town called Riverhead. Here we are getting rural, lots of migrant farm workers, poverty, depressing oversized strip malls in the middle of nowhere with 99 cent stores. People also don't realize that the Hamptons isn't ALL rich. There are obviously the really nice multi million dollar houses, but as you get further away from the water, its still farmland with poor illegal immigrants working and living there. On the north fork its the same thing. A lot of old cute farmhouses though. And a few gems, being nice little areas like Greenport, although I just saw on TV that they're doing a lot of drug busting there. (by the way, hope i didn't offend anyone, but i'm sure you're all used to it)long island is somewhat diverse despite what people think
Author: lawz http://long-island.urbanup.com/18132119. (Long Island) (125↑, 39↓)First of all, Long Island is not a penninsula. It is an island. Hence the name Long ISLAND. Secondly, I live on Long Island, in a prodominantly white suburb in Nassau to be specific and I have never heard anyone say that they live in "the city" if they live here. When most of us act "ghetto" we are basicaly mocking you all. We aren't "upstate". We're Long Island. It's a totally differnt portion of New York. Not all of us are rich snobs. Of course there are the select few who are, but around here, that's a minority. I'm middle class along with most of my town. However, two towns over is ridiculously wealthy and one town north is a bit, shall we say, poor. Being from upstate is not a bad thing. It's just got a different feel to it than from being on Long Island. Just like Long Island is significantly different from the city. And honestly, everyone that insults us Long Islanders is not necessarily jealous or wrong. We tend to be arrogant sons of bitches that think we're better than everyone else. But you all aren't completely right either. I've noticed that not many of you who have posted on here have looked at all the sides and are mostly ignorant assholes. But that's okay. If it works for you..have fun. Just don't expect to get anywhere in life. Oh and another thing. The whole "Yo, motherfuckaas from Long Island couln't last 2 days in Brooklyn\!". Okay, we probably couldn't. But then again, I don't know why you're so proud that you can. Personally, I would not be bragging about how I live in a poor neighborhood with a high crime rate.... Altogether, I love Long Island and I'm really proud to live here. I plan on moving out of NY for college but hopefully I'll have enough money to come back here to raise a family. It's really for the most part a great place. Most people are nice and friendly. I love being from the South Shore and I \<3 my Long Island accent. (I've been told on numerous occasions that my accent is exactly what is expected of LI people.) Oh but beware, there are 500,000,000 7-11's and McDonald's. And Sunrise Highway in Wantagh, Seaford, Massapeaqua, is covered in car dealerships. And I hope you all will just stop insulting eachother and repeating the same pathetic opinions. If you're going to post something, make it something new and somewhat intelligent. Thanks. =]You Know You're From Long Island When... No word ends in an ER, just an AH. (Long island) (93↑, 33↓)Long Island consists of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, though the New York City counties of Queens and Brooklyn are also on the Island. Nassau County is the wealthiest county in New York State(not including New York County/Manhattan). It is also the 5th wealthiest county in the country. Suffolk County is known for the exclusive Hamptons beach enclaves, where many actors, actresses, NYC businessmen, etc. have summer estates. Long Island is home to the most expensive house in the United States. Long Island is part of the New York City metropolitan area(which also includes Westchester County in NY, a few northern New Jersey Counties, and Western Connecticut). Long Island is known for its outstanding schools, many of which are nationally recognized. Long Island is known for its high quality of living, as well as being one of the most expensive places to live in the US. Fire Island National Seashore is also part of LI. Long Island is surrounded by beaches, and residents can enjoy Jones Beach, Long Beach, Point Lookout, Lido Beach, beaches in the Hamptons, Orient Point, etc. Long Island also has the lowest crime rate in the country. North Shore communities are known for affluence, South Shore communities are known for beaches. Long Islanders also generally have a distinct accent, usually associated with the New York City metro area.Oh you're from Long Island? You must be rich\! Oh you're from Long Island? Author: Cool Guy5 http://long-island.urbanup.com/186070012. (long island) (101↑, 43↓)You city people are complaining that we invade you clubs and ruin them every weekend? Well then why don't you just get the hell out of the Hamptons and Fire Island b/c you crowd it and stink up our beaches every summer. You cause traffic every weekend. No one likes you. The majority of you people who claim you are from NYC are either from one of the four boroughs that no one cares about, or from Manhattan, but you are originally from some hickass town outside of NY state in which you moved to the city to say your from NY. Like a lot of other people have pointed out, Long Island has its rich areas and its poor areas. I live in a town on the south shore which is split: somewhat rich-middle class. The southern part of the town on the water is where kids have parents who will buy them a car, but not a fucking Porsche or Corvette...maybe a used Chevy from the early 90's. I live in the northern part of town where kids have to start working when they turn 14 if they want a decent used car by the time they are a senior in high school. You also can't say that Long Island is ALL rich...you can't walk down the street in certain towns at night without being mugged. You NYCers should know this b/c certain Long Island towns are repeatedly on NYC news and newspapers. I would love to see some of you walk down the street in Central Islip, Brentwood, Wyandanch or Bay Shore and then we can talk about crime rates. And if you have ever even been here, you would NOT call Long Island rural in comparison to other suburbias. Long Island has the highest population density for suburbs in the country, and you will not see any farms until you pass Patchogue, and compared to Upstate (north of the Tappenzee Bridge), it does not even come close to rural. No one here thinks they are part of the city and we live here so we don't have to be a part of the city...you can ask ANY Long Island kid where their parents or grandparents grew up and they'll tell you the city, and obviously, they left the city for a reason."Let's get a huge group of us city slickers to clog up every single highway out to Long Island this weekend so we can trash the Hamptons anf Fire Island\! Don't forget the sunblock\!"
Author: likid http://long-island.urbanup.com/208575613. (long island) (136↑, 87↓)Whoa whoa, first of all, Long Island is not part of the city or most definitely, not part of upstate New York. Furthermore, there is a huge difference between Nassau and Suffolk, North shore and South shore. The Hamptons are basically a separate entity altogether. Billy Joel said it best: either you date a rich girl from the North Shore or a cool girl from the South shore. Except North Shore girls are actually cooler...but South shore beaches are the best (Robert Moses field 4\!). We live for the summers...beer bqs and the beach. People who hate Long Island are just jealous. Who wouldn't want to live on the water, have a gorgeous house, and drive a sweet car. We can go to NYC whenever we want (even though we never do). We could probably single handedly support Abercrombie, Polo, and Lily Pullitzer. Long Island is far superior to everywhere else.Long island is the breeding ground for gorgeous girls, hot guys, nice cars, and fabulous beaches.

Long Island can't be upstate solely based on that fact that is the southern-most part of New York. With that said, Most areas such as Nassau County and Western Suffolk County are not [rural]. [Rural] areas are hours from any type of city, having farms and acres of unused land. None of that is in any of these areas. I think that you people are just being defensive about where you are from. Nassau County is not an hour from the city. With traffic permitting, it is slightly over a 1/2 hour from the eastern part. I wont compare LI to Manhatten because Manhatten is Urban, but areas in queens are just as nice, and much nicer than areas on Long Island. We do have nice areas, but we also have bad areas as well. Areas like Hempstead are just the same as some parts of Queens, accept it.stop being ignorant and labeling people from Long Island as "hicks," especially being that there are places in Nassau County that are under a mile outside of Queens.

I go to public school, and don't live in a rich neighborhood. Long Island is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And to whoever said that Long Island is absoultely no where near New York City, please get your facts straight. I don't see these so-called $10 blow jobs on the corners..maybe at a train station once in a blue moon years back but those people are not seen around anymore...Maybe some of you who have stated about the "blow job queens" and drug users on every corner don't notice the ones you have because they are better hidden underneath fancier clothes? Author: Dawnmarie http://long-island.urbanup.com/208019221. There is more to Long Island than the Hamptons\! *gasp* There are also much more people there than snobby white people in rich towns. I've lived here my whole life and we have awesome beaches if you're willing to go past the crowded obvious ones, some really nice towns with good schools, and a lot of history. Levi town was one of the first incorporated suburbs in the 1940's after the depression and WWII. Now it is primarily dominated by Guido's and Japs. Very segregated compared to other parts of the country I came to realize after living in Florida which happens to way out as being a little too diverse for me. Many rich wealthy obnoxious towns, many poor ghetto working class towns but overall mostly middle class suburban towns with families. Pretty safe for being in such a populated place. The city is very accessible usually anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Look to buy a house prepare to spend $500,000 or more for a decent looking home in a nice community. But Long Island isn't all that bad The North Shore is mainly upper middle class and rich though there's still a lot of middle class people there. The North Shore is very preppy and WASPY and has a lot of Old Money. The South Shore is mainly middle class to working class with some lower-income pockets. South of Montauk Ave is more affluent than the rest of the South Shore. The South Shore is kinda like a less extreme version of the 'Jersey Shore'. The East End; there is the Hamptons and there is the North Fork. Seeing a concert at Jones Beach Theater - the best place in the world to see a show. Is it just me, or is every girl from Rockville Centre a b...? Billy Joel said it best, "either you date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a cool girl from the South Shore. What's the big deal about the Hamptons? If you're not from Long Island or NYC, you're not really from New York. You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "the City". The Belt Parkway... You know what it means to "change at Jamaica" ... or Babylon or Ronkonkoma. You never realize you have an accent until you leave. Your parents took you to Nathans or Carvel (on the way home from the beach). News 12... You are friends with at least one black person, an Italian, someone Hispanic, a Jew, and someone Irish. Gas = Expensive You remember concerts at Malibu. You curse. A lot. You can name at least three players on the Islanders Stanley Cup teams. You have come to terms with the fact that the Islanders have completely sucked since La Fontaine left. You remember the exact day you stopped going to Jones Beach and started going to Robert Moses. Public beach? What's that? Is Huntington really that cool? You've been to McHebe's Depot (Did an Irish guy and a Jewish guy really open that place up together?) Does anyone know why the HOV lane on the LIE stops in Hicksville instead of the Northern State? You've had a seagull crap on your car. You had a bicycle with a banana seat. Even the concept of the Islanders EVER leaving is unrealistic. The guy who thought up the "new" Islanders logo -- no way he's from Long Island. You've cruised on the "turnpike". You know someone with a cabana. You've played golf at Eisenhower Park (a.k.a. Salisbury Park)... legally or otherwise. If you're from Nassau County, you've been to Safety Town. Quick\! Who's the Suffolk County Executive? Don't know do you?\! You hate paying tolls. You don't have to go far to see your family. Grumman You know the exact streets that divided your school district, but you have no idea which election districts you were in. The Parkways, the LIE, the Causeway, Robert Moses Bridge You've been to or seen a Modell's, Genovese Drug, King Kullen (or know one of the family members). You live in a town called Hicksville, and it doesn't bother you. You were an Islander/Met/Jet fan or a Ranger/Yankee/Giant fan: there was no crossover. (I personally don't agree) You can correctly pronouce places like Hauppauge, Copiague, Islip, Islandia, Massapequa and Ronkonkoma You know the location of 6 malls, 12 McDonalds and 36 7-11's -- and can direct the designated driver to any one of them. You know what pool-hopping is You think the people from Brooklyn are "da wunz dat tawk wit a accent" (they are) Sledding in the sumps You knew of Massapequa before the Amy Fisher-Joey Buttafuoco nightmare You thought going to Queens was a hike You had "big hair" before those guys in Bon Jovi Trying to find the Amityville Horror house You pronounce it Longisland, just as one word. (Or get accused of doing so.) You've been taking grief for over 25 years from non-Long Islanders. The first time you heard the term "Long Island Iced Tea" you were somewhere else and you laughed, because you always knew it as just "Iced Tea" You recall watching the Long Island Expressway being built and remember the first time you ever went over the Throggs Neck Bridge and the Verrazano Bridge. You always call them sprinkles, not jimmies. You remember the guy who used to bring that pathetic, tired looking pony in front of the West Green for kids to take rides on. You don't go to the "shore". You go to the beach, of course. When you live somewhere else and are astounded to see that people actually stop at yellow lights. When you call it rubbernecking, not a gaper delay. When you just sort of presume that wherever you live, you'll be able to find good delis, good pizza, and good bagels. New York State consists of "the City", "Upstate" and "Long Island". Most Manhattanites are from nowhere near NYC, so they're opinion of what consitutes a New Yorker are irrelevent. It's hilarious that people living in MAnhattan critisize Long Island for being too rich, when the average rent there is like $2500, and a co-op starts at a Million. Long Isand may be segregated in many sections, But the Bayshore, Brentwood, Central Islip section of South Shore Suffolk is not. It is also working class to poor. Most of the declining areas are on the south shore and lay false the claim of all rich, all rural. In fact, LI is quite overdeveloped. Rural areas don't have punishing traffic. True, culturally, it is deficiant. There is, in fact, little to do at night or otherwise. I found it boring as hell, that's why I left. Also, many people are provincial and lame, but not as much so as 20 or so years ago. In the Brentwood/Bayshore area there are plenty of gangs, crack, violence, larceny and 10 dollar blowjobs from a variety of creatures. That's ghetto. Dangerous, depressing and cyclical."i'm from Brooklyn" "When you move to L.I.?" "When I was 5" or "Where you from?" Although the NYC boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn are in fact geographically part of the island, when one speaks of "Long Island", they are generally only referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Most of the area was undeveloped or farmland until the 20th century. The end of WW II saw the development of many towns and mass migration from NYC. The vast majority of the citizens are middle class homeowners, though there are a few pockets of poverty here and there. There are also some exceptionally wealthy areas as some of the richest people in America own homes on Long Island. Most of these areas are on the North Shore, the fabled "Gold Coast" of legend and lore...that Fitzgerald romantacized in The Great Gatsby. Most of the southern half of the island is flat, but as one moves north of the Long Island Expressway, the terrain becomes more undulating and hilly, though the highest spot is only 401 feet above sea level near Huntington Station. The climate features cool, wet springs, very warm summers, mild autumns that often last well into November, and moderately cold winters. One can generally expect several snowstorms of greater than four inches from December through March and blizzard conditions do set in from time to time. From an aesthetic perspective, many undeveloped areas do feature scenic beauty, though suburban sprawl seems to be ever encroaching upon them...[Long Island] [Gold Coast]

Author: jasasloeoepwgagajajamaja http://long-island.urbanup.com/541804144. (Long Island) (4↑, 3↓)Long Island is an island located to the east of Manhattan, stretching in the northeasterly direction. It is home to four counties, of which two -- Brooklyn and Queens -- are Boroughs of New York City. In political and cultural contexts, however, the name "Long Island" refers to the portion of the island occupied by the remaining two counties: Nassau and Suffolk. One of America's most vivid examples of urban sprawl, Long Island was mostly rural until the late 1940's, at which time developers began radically transforming its landscape into what became an endless sea of cookie-cutter housing and strip malls. It is characterized by overcrowding, insane transportation costs and high property taxes. Although it is socioeconomically diverse, and serene rural scenery can still be found there by those who look very hard, it is a quintessential American suburb in that it combines the worst of the urban and rural worlds: all the crowding and expense of living in the city with none of the cultural sophistication or tolerance; all the dullness of the country, with none of the bucolic charm. Long Islanders are known for their distinctive accent, which is best described as exceedingly nasal and guttural. For example "long" is pronounced "lawn'", "coffee" is "cawffy", and someone whose name is Mark would actually be called "Mawk".My friends bought a house in Long Island, and now their tax payments are almost as high as their mortgage payments\!

Long Island especially Nassau has been greatly affected by its rowdy neighbor and Nassau is considered to be a mainly urban area with a few suburban towns sprinkled in. It consits of rich neighborhoods like Great Neck and Muttontown. And poor neighborhoods like Roosevelt, and Hempstead. The two citys of Long Island are Glen Cove and Long Beach which both have urban feels and is developed more than your average city and both have crime similar to those of big citys. Suffolk is somewhat urban, somewhat suburban and somewhat rural. About 100 miles east of the NYC border in suffolk is green acres and farm land. Though someparts of suffolk have been infested with urban sprawl and have been infested with gangs. Other towns are nice and quiet and particulary suburban like Smithtown and St. James. Sometowns are notorious like Wyandanch and Central Islip."My cousin lives on a nice block, but right around the corner theres a bunch a guys smoking pot and selling drugs"

It does have malls, its own language and lots of statutory rape. This is the land of Joey Battafuccos and Amy Fishers. Most people from outside the Island, think "there must be something wrong with the water on Long Island". This is a common phrase used in NYC, Westchester and Fairfield. Most of the people on LI have never left LI which gives the place a very haunted and inbred feel. Those who are ambitious will go to college instead of working at their uncle's detailing shop but will go to Hofstra or LIU so they don't have to leave. Many LIers hope to one day work at Cablevision (which is run by a junkie who screwed up the NY Knicks and his daddy's company) or the LIRR where it was found that 90% of retiree's were also claiming 100% disability with their pensions. Most girls in LI gain sexual experience early at the hands of adult males, many of them married. This is one of the reasons why LI girls usually look washed out by the time they are 18. Drugs are a contributing factor. Many people believe that if you give a LI girl some cocaine you are guaranteed anal sex. Much of this sex occurs at one of LI's many motels which charge by the hour and are hotbeds of adultery and body lice. Boys on LI look forward to the day when they men and can begin feeding cocaine to LI girls in return for anal sex at motels. Since they have to wait, they will usually spend their teens doing drugs and drinking in parking lots. There must be something wrong with the water on Long Island

Author: Jimbo Jonsey http://long-island.urbanup.com/300841960. (long island) (48↑, 59↓)One of the most misunderstood areas of our nation. Settled in 1638, the island consists of 4 counties, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Brooklyn and Queens are Boroughs of New York City and are therefore not generally considered part of Long Island. If you are "dissing" Long Island and you are from Long Island, you are most likely from Nassau County, a stale, bizarre, and overdeveloped area full of strip malls and busy highways. It is the quintessential Long Island stereotype and unfortunately gives the rest of Long Island a bad name. If youre "dissing" Long Island and are not from Long Island, youre probably a young person from the midwest now living a [hip] lifestyle in New York City. You have never really been to Long Island, except maybe a friends parents home in Nassau County. Most of Suffolk County is still very rural and has maintained much of its historical character and charm, though the integrity of these self-sustaining villages are constantly threatened by the encroaching Nassau County. Suffolk County is more like an area of New England as far as its towns and villages go. It is a very relaxing area and home to a plethora of outdoor opportunities and is a place full of culture and historical value for those who seek it. It's very easy to write off Long Island as a suburban wasteland, and as a matter of fact...keep doing it because its getting too crowded for the people who love it here. :)Nassau County gives the rest of Long Island a bad name.

And to clear the "New Yorker" term up. "New Yorker" comes from "NEW YORK City" not New York State, so it refers to people in the city. Since Long Island is so closely connected with teh city, both culturly and geographically (brooklyn and queens are on long island), Long Islanders are also called New Yorkers (except for the east enders who stay in their shells and never go west). They have no culture, fashion, nightlife, etc. There is nothing to do on Long Island but go to the mall, get drunk, play cards, gossip, and do drugs. Most people who are from Long Island think they are superior and regard Manhattan as a dump. Just shows how ignorant these people are. On the weekends Long Islanders invade Manhattan to go to the clubs, restaurants, bars. Pretty funny since they say they hate Manhattan. They ruin any part of Manhattan they visit. Once Long Island people start hanging out at a popular Manhattan club, no one from manhattan attends anymore and the club closes done. Long Islanders have no fashion sense or style. They wear clothes from Kmart and are stuck in 1996. They couldnt tell a Versace shirt from a Kmart brand shirt. They also could never afford to live in Manhattan.
